Apple has redesigned the antenna in the iPhone 4S so that the cellular radio in the phone can choose between two antennas, depending on which is sending or receiving signal best. These two antennas are part of the stainless steel band that wraps around the sides of the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4S. On the iPhone 4 this band is divided into four antennas Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth and cellular, while on the iPhone 4S, the (GSM) cellular antenna is divided up into two pieces. If the one piece of the cellular antenna experiencing attenuation, the radio will switch to the other piece of the cellular antenna.

Processor

The Iphone 4S powered by a dual core Apple A5 processor. The A5 chips based upon the dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 MPCore CPU with NEON SIMD accelerator and a dual core PowerVR SGX543MP2 GP. Apple states that the CPU is up to twice more powerful and the GPU up to seven times faster of its predecessor, the Apple A4. Apple states the iPhone 4S is quick and responsive, which makes all the difference when you’re launching apps, browsing the web, and gaming with longer battery life.

Memory and Storage

The Iphone 4S has 512 MB of low-power DDR2 RAM clocked at 533 MHz, the same as its predecessor. Maximum available storage size increased to 64 GB whilst the 32 GB and 16 GB model options were still available. Unfortunately, there is no memory expansion slot.

Display

The Iphone 4S brings Apple’s very own Retina Display. The Retina Display offers a super high pixel density by squeezing a 960×640 pixel resolution into 3.5 inches LED-backlit IPS TFT, capacitive touchscreen, with a pixel density of 326 pixels per inch (ppi). The Retina Display also adopt In-Plane Switching (IPS) technology to improve viewing angles and enhance color display.

The Retina Display has 800:1 contrast ratio which will allow the Retina Display to provide a better rendering of details for both photos and videos. It also features 500 cd/m2 max brightness, to provide sharp and vibrant image.

The Retina Display Glass made of Gorilla Glass, which is more scratch resistance and durable. The glass also features an oil-resistant coating that helps keep the screen clean. The Retina display includes LED backlighting and an ambient light sensor that intelligently adjusts the brightness of the screen for optimal viewing and battery life. It also features a proximity sensor, that immediately turns off the display, when Iphone lifted to the ear for a phone call, to save power and prevent accidental dialing.

Camera

The camera on the iPhone 4S is capable of shooting 8MP stills (3264 by 2448 pixels) and recording 1080p HD videos at 30fps with upgraded quality (30% better clarity, 26% better white balance, color accuracy) thanks to additional lens, IR filter and Image signal processor (built-in A5). The built-in gyroscope is able to stabilize the camera while recording video. Other features of the camera are macro (for close up pictures) and faster capture including being able to take its first picture in 1.1 seconds and the next half a second later. The camera features auto focus, tap to focus, photo and video geo-tagging, face detection in still images.

Iphone 4S also has a front camera with VGA-quality photos and video at up to 30 fps, for video call.

Data and Connectivity

Apple states that the Iphone 4S device is a World phone and can work on both GSM & CDMA networks. It supports quad-band UMTS / HSDPA / HSUPA (850, 900, 1,900, 2,100MHz) and quad-band GSM / EDGE (850, 900, 1,800, 1,900MHZ) device, while also support dual-band CDMA EV-DO Rev. A (900, 1,900MHz).

Operating System

Iphone 4S powered by Apple iOS 5 Operating System, which includes over 200 new features including Notification Center, an innovative way to easily view and manage notifications in one place without interruption and iMessage™, a new messaging service that lets you easily send text messages, photos and videos between all iOS 5 users. iOS 5 will also be available as a free software update for iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS customers allowing them to experience these amazing new features.

Siri Software

IPhone 4S also introduces Siri, a voice activated intelligent assistant that helps you get things done just by asking. Siri can be activated by press-and-hold the home button when the phone is asleep, or by lifting up the phone to your head as if you’ll make a phone call. Siri understands context allowing you to speak naturally when you ask it questions, for example, if you ask “Will I need an umbrella this weekend?” it understands you are looking for a weather forecast. Siri can help you to make calls, to dictate text messages and emails,to schedule meetings and reminders, to make notes, to search the Internet, to find local businesses, to open web pages, to access the MP3 player, to get directions and so on.

Battery and Lifetime

The iPhone 4S is stated to have 200 hours standby time (iPhone 4 300 hours), 8 hours talk time on 3G (iPhone 4 7 hours), 14 hours talk time on 2G, 6 hours 3G browsing, and 9 hours Wi-Fi browsing. The time of use depends on power from the lithium-ion battery inside the device. It can be recharged by power from a USB port or power adapter. The battery is enclosed inside the device, and as other Apple devices, is not designed to be removed except for completely new battery replacements by experienced technicians.
