Blackberry 9900 : Thin and Fast

Blackberry Bold Touch 9900 (dubbed as dakota) is part of the 9000 device series.  Introduced in August 2011, it is the first of the Bold line to provide a touchscreen. It is also equipped with BlackBerry OS 7, and marks a return to the form factor of the original 9000 and its popular wide-set physical keyboard. And this Blackberry Bold Touch 9900 is the thinnest blackberry ever.

Design and Dimensions

The Blackberry 9900 is RIM’s thinnest BlackBerry ever at just 10.5mm thickness. It Weighs in at a mere 130g and flanked by soft-touch rubber, the Blackberry 9900 feels comfortably in hand, and with size at 66mm wide and 116mm high, still fits comfortably and safely in your pocket.

In terms of the overall design, the BlackBerry Bold 9900 smartphone were built in the tradition of the BlackBerry Bold line of smartphones, with purposeful detailing plus premium materials and finish. The brushed stainless steel frame extending around the handset adds reliable durability while the carbon fiber battery door in the back is  incredibly durable and lightweight and it helps optimize antennas, radios, and other device technology for highly reliable connectivity. The carbon fiber is the composite material that’s used to construct next-generation airplanes, racecars, and high-tech sports equipment.

Performance

The Blackberry 9900 powered by a Qualcomm Scorpion MSM 8655 processor, which runs at 1,2 GHz on the Snapdragron S2 chipset platform for higher multimedia performance. It brings an Adreno 205 GPU (Graphics Processing Units) which means this blackberry 9900 has hardware accelerated graphics inside, powering BlackBerry 7′s hardware-accelerated graphics, which RIM has dubbed “liquid graphics”.

Display

The Blackberry 9900 has a TFT capacitive touchscreen, 16 M colors,  2.8-inch 24-bit VGA (640 x 480 pixel) display with a pixel density of 287ppi which means images look crisp, clear and sharp at in 24 bits colors. This sort of resolution is really useful when it comes to handling fine text, images and webpages.

Storage and Memory

The Blackberry 9900 has 768MB of internal memory and 8GB of internal storage, with the microSD slot capable of providing an additional 32GB. As with all BlackBerrys device, the 768MB internal memory is reserved for both system and third party apps, as well as system tasks. The Additional RAM capacity is used to power the capabilities of Liquid Graphics and the higher resolution displays found in the BlackBerry 7 devices.

Camera

The 9900 comes with 5MP camera, 2592×1944 pixels resolution, with no autofocus functionality. RIM has removed autofocus functionality in favor of Blackberry 9900′s thin profile, making do instead with a fixed-focus EDOF (Extended Depth of Field) lens.  EDOF is clever technology, but will never be as good as proper focusing, and with the 9900 this difference is especially noticeable when trying to take close up photos, such as business user might do when grabbing copies of receipts or business cards. The camera has an LED flash and can do geo-tagging, face detection, and image stabilization.

When it comes to video, the camera can do smooth HD video  recording at 720p (1280 x 720), but note that, this is fixed focus model so you can’t get the drama of close-up video that you do elsewhere. Don’t expect video calling or doing hangouts with google+ because there is no front facing camera.

Data Connectivity

The Blackberry 9900 supports high speed CDMA or HSPA+ giving maximum download speeds of up to 14.4 Mbps. It also features WIFI dual band connectivity, 802.11 b/g/n at 2.4 GHz and 802.11 a/n at 5 GHz. It also features device connectivity through bluetooth v2.1 with EDR support, and microUSB v2.0
